Welcome to the official website of the Catholic Society here at Portsmouth University
Join us on Sundays for 12pm Mass at St John's Catholic Cathedral, Edinburgh Road, Portsmouth. Our first meeting of 2011/2012 will be on Sunday 25th Sep where we'll be going for lunch afterwards!

We are a group of Roman Catholic students at Portsmouth University who have come together for friendship and to grow our faith as a community. We have fun meeting/getting to know new people in our sister Catholic Societies all over the country and most importantly, to try to be active with our faith whilst living as a Catholic student in a modern 21st Century environment.
We have strong ties with the Catholic diocese of Portsmouth and come together at St John’s cathedral on a monthly basis, though many of us go to Mass there weekly.
So, if you’re a Catholic student in Portsmouth, a lapsed Catholic wanting to return to the faith or are someone who isn't Catholic but interested in learning more about the Catholicism then please feel free to get in touch!
Aims: †
As a society, there is of course, a clearly defined underlying doctrinal basis, faithful to the Catechism (the teaching of the Magisterium) and the Holy See, so that members know what to expect...
However, don't worry if you're either returning to the faith, not a Catholic (we also welcome Orthodox) or just interested.
The group is there to gently expose you to a friendly Catholic culture, involving prayer, the Sacraments, and also if you're interested, give you a chance to explore the deep history and tradition both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches share.
We: †
- Provide members with a safe, comfortable means to make friends and network within a Catholic community
- Offer talks on the Catechism and relevant topics of interest to young Catholics
- Provides social events to enable members to get to know eachother and hopefully develop lasting friendships.
- Give members the opportunity to go on retreats, weekends away and other special trips.
- Enable members to develop their understanding and relationship with God within a community of faith and give them involvement in parish life with regular access to the sacraments.
- Offer members the opportunity to get involved with life in Portsmouth by volunteering and interacting with other societies.
We believe our Catholic faith is something to be proud of and to be celebrated wherever we are, especially following the visit of our Holy Father Pope Benedict to the UK in 2010. A delegation from Portmsouth CathSoc were able to travel up to Hyde park to take part in the Saturday vigil on the 18th September 2010 and World Youth Day Madrid 2011. Both were memorable experiences for those concerned!
